Health

University Northside Family Center:
The University is interested in bridging the gap between research and delivery of services to families, through co-location and collaboration between the University and community based partners.  The Children Youth and Families Consortium, the Institute for Child Development and the Academic Health Center (Medical School) are developing a proposal to:

  • Provide prevention and evidence-based intervention services to families at risk and their children
  • Disseminate effective treatment strategies locally and nationally
  • Conduct research in the areas of child development, child neglect/maltreatment and mental illness; and
  • Train future practitioners and research scientists

Academic Health Center Outreach:
The Academic Health Center (which contains the Medical School, as wells as the Schools of Nursing, Dentistry, Pharmacy and Public Health) has several initiatives either in development or implementation including a Saturday Academy, Building Blocks for Health and Service Learning.

  • The Saturday Academy is targeted at eliminating the achievement gap of middle and high school students and focusing on early engagement in health careers. The University is applying for an Empowerment Zone grant to fund this work.
  • The Building Blocks for Health project is underway and involves work with the Minnesota Department of Health in the Jordan and Hawthorne neighborhoods, literally “block by block.” It includes a clinical community assessment (asset based) as part of a larger “listening” project with Northpoint Health and Wellness Center.
  • The Service Learning initiative takes faculty and students and places them into the community for service as well as learning.  Availability for service learning opportunities is an important criterion for selecting community partners.  These partners are invaluable in helping to advance the Academic Health Center’s mission and in helping the AHC to prepare the next generation of health professionals to successfully care for an increasingly diverse population.  Service-learning partnerships are also essential as we accelerate the cross-cultural learning of faculty and students and advance diversity among our health professionals.
