- How can institutions demonstrate that students are actually achieving the kinds of learning they need for life, work, and citizenship
- How are institutions structured---internally and externally---to build real-world capabilities that empower students to apply their knowledge
These questions underscore the need for a renewed sense of clear purpose across the curriculum and co-curriculum. Participants at AAC&U's 2008 annual meeting will explore innovative and imaginative strategies and structures for college learning---purposeful pathways intentionally designed to encourage students to integrate knowledge of science, cultures, and society; hone high-level intellectual and practical skills; develop person and social responsibility; and apply learning to complex problems and challenges
Participants will also explore assessment tools that can measure achievement of essential outcomes and provide useful data to ensure all students get the education they need and deserve in today's world.

The Annual Meeting offers a broad range of sessions and services that include multiple pre-conference workshops, approximately 200 general program sessions, an Exhibit Hall, a Resource Center, and an Accreditation Share Fair. More than 4,000 administrators and faculty from a wide variety of higher education institutions located throughout its 19-state region attended the 2007 Annual Meeting.
A hallmark of the Annual Meeting is it reliance on representatives of affiliated institutions to share their experience with others. This is a great opportunity to engage in discussions about current issues, to highlight your institutions accomplishments, and to help other by sharing what you have learned.

General Education and Assessment will address issues central to creating and assessing a coherent general education curriculum that fosters increasingly sophisticated learning outcomes and integrates learning across the disciplines and majors. It will provide participants with recent research on student learning outcomes and their value in opening doors beyond college. It will also explore the most promising practices in general education, including those related to the educational change process, pedagogy, curriculum design, assessment, and transfer and articulation.
Note: Specific theme varies annually, but AACU appears to sponsor an assessment-related conference every year.
