Academic Program Review and Approval

The University uses a standard set of criteria to review proposals for new or changed academic programs. The criteria parallel those used in the University's periodic review of collegiate and departmental academic and administrative units.

Program Approval Policy

A complete proposal includes four parts:

1. Cover memo from dean/vice president/chancellor
2. Academic Program Proposal Form (PDF - 19.8 Kb)
3. Proposal narrative
4. Proposal supporting materials

Instructions for Proposing a New Program

Instructions for Proposing Program Changes

1. Add a formal track to an existing major.
2. Change an academic program or unit name.
3. Change a degree designation.
4. Discontinue a program.
5. Offer new distance delivery of all or most coursework for an existing program.
6. Add a new site (outside Minnesota) to deliver an existing program.
7. Change required courses in a major or minor.
8. Change number of credits in a major or minor.
9. Change definitions of options in a major.
10. Add an honors option to an existing undergraduate program.
11. Add "second-tier" admissions requirements to a major.
12. Change other curricular details.
