Overall Ranking by University of Florida

Higher education institutions are ranked by numerous sources.  Among the better known and most reliable is the University of Florida's annual ranking of the top 200 American research universities.

The Center at the University of Florida ranks universities on nine measures or "quality indicators:"

  • doctorates granted
  • National Academy members
  • faculty awards
  • post-doctoral appointees
  • total research expenditures
  • federal research expenditures
  • endowment assets
  • annual giving

Institutions are ranked according to the number of quality indicators in the top 50. The University of Minnesota - Twin Cities has ranked in the top 20 of all research universities and among the top six public universities for the past four years.  The table below shows the University of Minnesota's overall rank among public and private research universities for 2004.

NOTE:  It has been discovered that the reporting of endowment assets in the University of Florida's annual study was incorrect because the Minnesota Medical Foundation's FY 2003 endowment assets of $177 million were not included.  This omission affected not only the University of Minnesota's endowment assets ranking but also its overall ranking among the top American public and private universities.  Efforts are underway to correct these reporting errors in future University of Florida reports.
